“I saw you at the rehearsal dinner last night, but I don’t think we’ve been formally introduced. I’m Nathan.” He said, extending his hand in greeting.

Hello Nathan.

“I’m Val, nice to meet you Nathan.” I said, accepting his handshake.

“I love that. Short for...Valerie, Valentina?

“Valini, actually. It’s a Hindu name. My father is Indian.” I had no idea why I was giving him so much information.

“What does it mean?”

“Stars.”

“Wow, it’s a fitting name for a beautiful woman.” He said, inching his hand further up my thigh.

I grinned like an idiot as he continued talking, his rich baritone voice vibrating through me. He had me laughing and drinking, never allowing my glass to be empty very long before he had the bartender topping me off with another. I’m sure he thought he was getting me drunk, but I could hold my liquor, and the drinks were weak anyway. I knew exactly what I was doing. He wasn’t being shy at all with his large, strong hands, and the thought of what those hands might be able to do was driving my interest in him.

When he asked me if I wanted to join him in his hotel room, it only took a quick glance in Devon’s direction for me to oblige. Seeing him smiling, happy, with that pretty bitch giggling in his face...I needed some therapy… the kind only a new bed partner could provide.

I glanced up in time to see Val leaving the reception hall with Nathan, an old friend I had known since grade school. Nathan was a player, something he was very good at, and made no secrets about. He was notorious in our hometown, and that reputation followed him everywhere he went, along with a string of pissed off women. He was the last person on this earth I wanted to see Val with, but it wasn’t my business. Val was a smart woman, very intuitive, and I was sure she had already picked up that vibe from him. I could only assume she knew what she was doing.

I turned my attention back to Alex, who was looking beautiful in a rich purple dress that contrasted against her copper skin. She was watching, with a smile on her face as the kids took over the dance floor, bouncing and skipping to the music.

“I can’t wait to have a few little rugrats of my own,” she said softly, almost to herself, as she looked across the room at Chris and Tara, who was holding baby Kendall on her lap as they talked with some of the guests.

“How many do you think you want?” I asked her.

She turned to me with wide eyes. “I am so sorry, you’re gonna think I’m crazy, talking about kids on the first date.” She blushed, looking away.

“Not at all,” I said, grabbing her hand. It was refreshing actually, a woman who knew what she wanted. “I want kids too, two or three.” I told her, squeezing her hand in reassurance. Alex had been smiling all night, and it was quite contagious.
